Handicap Revisions - an update on the system

Postby Mailman » Thu Nov 05, 2009 9:04 pm

Since the start of the handicap element here at APCD Offline I have tinkered with the handicap system to the point where I am now satisfied that the system I now have in place is giving the majority of players handicaps that are fair but not too penal. My goal is to have handicaps such that you should feel satisfied with a net Par result for each event and feel as though you are in with a chance with your total in red numbers. With easy conditions an/or a good round you should be in red numbers and correspondingly over par for tough conditions/poor round. I have now updated the original rules to reflect what the subtle changes are. In essence the important changes to note are the following:

1. Instead of using the median score as being the SSS I have taken 1 shot off this figure. i.e SSS = Median - 1.

2. SSS to be capped at no higher than Par+1 for the round. That way someone who scores at about their handicap on a tough setup should not be overly penalised.

3. Very poor rounds (=> +5 over SSS) now get a +0.2 increment although the total increment per tournament will be +0.5.

These are not the final changes as the system may evolve more once we have finished the 2010 season

I have been tinkering a little with the way things are worked out.

I have changed the SSS determinant to be the Median score - 1 stroke as before but now this SSS cap is set @ no more than course par. So in the case of 3 rounds @ Crater's edge the calculated Median - 1 figure was higher than course par of 72 (only in Rd 2 was the Median 72) . Had it not been for Eagle Ed's barnstorming final round, Rd 4 would have been declared a non-qualifier as he was the only player to shoot below 72 net.

The limit for handicap upwards movement per tournament has been changed from 0.5 to a full 1.0 shot.

The handicap system appears to be working well for most folk with the exception being those that came in under an unrealistic handicap allowance. That is why I have been a little more active in my application of 'Rule 19' recently for players at both ends of the scoring. It is still my ultimate goal to make a target of -10 something that should put you in the shake-up.
